An email from Mother Rebecca

Hi all,
I'm finally online--and John is one week old today. I've attached a picture my friend Kat took in the hospital. And, you can see others and a little film John's cousin Tris (the father of Lilly) took in the hospital at
I will send along a more recent pic as soon as I can work out the technology. He changes by the day.
As most of you know, the labor and delivery went well--thanks in large part to our primary caregiver, Bonnie Yim, a midwife with the obgyn practice I go to. She pulled a 20 hour shift to see John into the world, and remained committed and focused on a vaginal birth despite my "advanced maternal age." John was in distress when he came through the birth canal--largely due to his cord being around his neck and getting pinched with each contraction (or at least that's what I think happened). I was on oxygen throughout pushing, pausing after each contraction to inhale deeply to bring extra oxygen to the baby. When John came out all blue grey and with a funny shaped conehead, I was freaked, but the NYU pediatricians brought him around to pink and energetic quickly (well, okay, it felt like an eternity).
Mom and Stephen were both incredible helpmates throughout the overnight process. I love them.
I am amazed by the entire experience--from just how darned hard it is to bear a baby and recover (and that's without any big injuries) to absorbing the daily wonder of his new life into our lives. Sounds dorky--and it doesn't really get at my feelings very well, but it's both much bigger and much more ordinary than I expected.
I am totally excited for him to meet all of you. He has entered a fabulous family.
I love you,
Rebecca
